Subject: Re: The purpose of this news group: netsurfing?
Hello All
Is it time to create a one stop place for FAQs? As I see it
this group needs really three different areas to cover most questions
that new people ask. I feel that we need
1) Where do I find? covered by Larsen Consulting, which can be
Is there a prog... sending email
to: info@lcs.com
Subject: FAQ
2) How do install...
3) Other common asked questions
If nobody else is willing to handle the creating and organizing
of a FAQ I will. In particular I am interested in creating a Cookbook
of installation so that if you know what hardware you have you can get
step by step instructions for installing the software going. In a most
of the cases that I have seen there is little or no understanding of
Internet or how to get things working. I have a lan manager friend who is
too busy to learn how these things are done so it is really up to others
to learn this and as you can imagine it is quite difficult for the average
wordprocessor users to now try to install programs like Mosiac. If there is
an agreement then I will start the
"INTERNET SOFTWARE INSTALLATION COOKBOOK USING WINSOCKS".
You all can help me by sending me a list of the steps you used to set up
your system. I promise full credit for all answers.
In regards to part 3, I will keep tabs on the questions asked and
try to compile a list of the FAQs and the best answers. Of course if you
want nominate some question and/or give a good answer I would appreciate
any and all help.
I also think that if there is a FAQ spot then there should notice
placed quite often on the system to let people know where to find things.
Of course I would also do a post to news.answers. I will talk to our
network manager about setting up a mail server, or I can dump these file
on one of the ftp sites say cica.
What is your opinion? If I start this I will need help for quite a
lot of you, but I am willing if you are.
Cheers
Paul

Subject: Security bug in Version 1.9a and previous of WFTPD!
To all current users of WFTPD:
There has been a bug-sighting in WFTPD version 1.9a (and presumably
earlier versions) that will allow people to log into any system
running wftpd without having the required access permissions.
For obvious reasons, I am unwilling to publicly announce exactly
_what_ the bug is, but I can offer a fixed version.
The new (unregistered) version is available from ftp.wst.com in file
/pub/winsock/wftpd/wftpd19b.zip. Registered users have already been
informed of this fix. If you are a registered user, but did not
receive an announcement informing you of how to fetch the fixed
version, please email me for further instructions.
Thanks for your support,
Alun.

You have hit the problem right on the head. 32-bit disk access turns on the
the 32-bit block access mode that is, for some strange reason, turned off by
default on IDE hard drives. I still don't know a whole lot about this, but
the way I understand it, just about all IDE hard drives have the capability to
transfer data in 32-bit chunks. However, they default to 16-bit because of
the controller cards. I don't know much more beyond that. I do know that
there are several ways to turn on the 32-bit disk access outside of Windows.
Some of the newer BIOS manufactures (AMI for instance) have the capability of
turning on 32-bit access from the CMOS setup. I've also seen device drivers
(Drive Rocket and VLIDE.SYS) that do the same thing, I think???
SCSI drives do not have the same problem. 32-bit disk access is the norm for
those with controllers that can handle it. That is why the option is greyed
out in Windows. You can, however, still enable 32-bit file access if you're
using Windows for Workgroups. Believe me, it makes a BIG difference in speed.
I'd love to know exactly what is going on, as I am, by no means, an expert on
this. I have used two SCSI drives in two different systems, though, and
32-bit disk access was not an option on either one.

GLINK for Windows 5.0 from Gallagher&Roberston supports this.
It includes an extensive script language, Kermit file transfer
and full VT Terminal emulation. It can be used on top of Winsock.
